UNESCO "Looking at the Universal and Diversity"

UNESCO and INSISTANCE magazine : Universal and Diversity"
2010 World Philosophy Day for The International Year for the Rapprochement of Cultures

INSISTANCE magazine (Art-Psychoanalysis-Politics) and UNESCO -
Thursday 18 and Friday 19 November 2010

The idea of a universal humanity is a recent development in history. The way in which it appeared for the first time in Europe, in Athens, clearly demonstrates the difficulty which such a notion poses to the human mind. The path which led the Greeks to develop universal logos did not exempt them from an ethnocentricity that drove them to label anyone who appeared alien to their logos as "barbarians". Thus, no sooner was it attested than the idea of the universal was challenged by the encounter with cultural diversity. The history of civilizations shows that this contradiction repeated itself endlessly, as if the unveiling of the universal systematically required its veiling. Biblical thought, which came to the idea of a universal by inventing the "One", excluded Pagans. Christianity presented itself as good news for all, except those who did not believe in Christ. Hindu thought conceived of a man who was cosmically unlimited but socially limited by a caste system.Today, we need to elaborate on how to avoid the "universal/diversity" dualism by explaining - with the help of philosophers, psychoanalysts and artists - how what is diverse, different and alien can be seen as deriving from a notion of the universal that is more complex in conception than those left to us by history.
